be-authenticBEach Inspirations: Be Authentic ~ 8 Authentic Self Quotes

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” — C.G. Jung

Are You Being True To You?

Shailene Woodley’s quote “I think the most important thing in life is self-love, because if you don’t have self-love, and respect for everything about your own body, your own soul, your own capsule, then how can you have an authentic relationship with anyone else?  reflects my thoughts on the importance of self-love. Unless we love and respect ourself, yes every part of US!

That can be challenging I know. My recent journey to wellness included a huge dose of self-love. I had already spent many years working on myself, yet back in July 2011, I discovered I had another stage in the journey to really love me, and yes it is still a work in progress.

If you are a regular reader here you will know I said that BEach Inspiration would be a regular Friday feature! Well last week my lovely blog decided to misbehave. The weather also has been grey, so sand writing time has been very slim. I had written Be Authentic earlier on, when I started making the collection of A words for the book.  So today I have decided to share my favorite quotes about being your authentic self. Being true to you. 🙂 These quotes  speak to me about being authentic:

Being authentic is the ability to be true to oneself. Living an authentic life requires the ability to be true to our own wants, needs and desires and not live our lives by the opinion of others. Being authentic is the ability to make self-honoring choices and stand firmly in who we are in our core. Being true to ourselves gives us the insight and compassion to see others for who they are, not who we expect them to be. It frees us up from the judgment of ourselves and others and it gives others the freedom to be themselves as well.  ~Victoria J. Reynolds

“We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be.”  ― May Sarton

That inner voice has both gentleness and clarity. So to get to authenticity, you really keep going down to the bone, to the honesty, and the inevitability of something. – Meredith Monk

We need to find the courage to say NO to the things and people that are not serving us if we want to rediscover ourselves and live our lives with authenticity. – Barbara de Angelis

The authentic self is the soul made visible. ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

Feelings or emotions are the universal language and are to be honored. They are the authentic expression of who you are at your deepest place. ~ Judith Wright

  1. I agree that it is so important to become clear about your core values and have the courage to stay as true to them as you possibly can. I’ve only been able to do that in the second half of my life. Early on I was one of those kids bullied in school, so self-esteem was pretty low – and didn’t get much better when I was married to a man who was verbally abusive. The experience wasn’t a loss though, because I’ve worked with our local women’s shelter helping other women who’ve had similar experiences because most people don’t realize internal injuries can be just as damaging as external.

  2. Suzie,

I am thrilled to connect with you! I dubbed myself an Authenticity Advocate because I made a commitment to show up as the most authentic version of myself that I can in every situation. Your post is full of golden nuggets of wisdom. Right now my mind is wandering to sharing this with my tribe because it’s such a useful resource. Kudos to you!

    My favorite authenticity quote:
‘In this life, I’ll always be true… first to me, and then to you.”

Looking forward to reading and sharing more of your wonderful insights!

  3. It’s so weird that we trained ourselves (and some of us were trained) to be inauthentic. Hmmmmm. I think the world is changing and embracing our authentic selves more and more.

  4. Hi Suzie! I loved it – this is so true that many cannot love themselves and so being authentic is more difficult, because if you do not love yourself you cannot know yourself intimately.
    Keep up the great work!
    Vicki

  5. Being authentic is scary at first because most people are taught to conform. However, when we awaken to the lovely voice singing inside and start living into who we truly are, people actually respect that as it is such a rare attribute. Because people are mirrors and reflect what they see, your shift in living truthfully, helps them have the courage to take the first steps in being their true self as well. It is a beautiful and awesome thing to witness. Thanks for sharing this post about being authentic.

  6. Hi Suzie, Great quotes, great share! I also agree tha being authentic feels more natural as I get older. I am now more willing to tap into my feminity and Universal energy…Feels great! Great share, Thank you! ~ Nathalie

    1. Thanks Nathalie,
That’s interesting your comment about it being more natural as you get older. I often think back to my 20’s and I think that for me then i was authentic without being conscious of it. I do feel that now I am moving back to that feeling with much more wisdom

  7. Hmmm being authentic gets easier as I get older but I just had an aha. I have been hiding my BE vitamins since I discovered your BEach inspiration – and that’s not authentic. There’s room for both. They are the same but not – we are different and resonate with different people. Time to resurrect xx

    1. Hi Louise,
How exciting- I look forward to you BE Vitamins reemerging. True there is room for both. So pleased this inspired you to have the aha
      Namaste xx

  8. I think the most authentic quote I’ve ever heard, which still resonates with me daily, is from Kate Hepburn. She noted: “Never complain; never explain.” She let an authentic life to be sure!

  9. Thanks for posting this, it is so important that people realize how crucial it is to actually love yourself before you can be even true to yourself or authentic in every sense of the word. You cannot love yourself unless you know yourself, and for some this is a long and thoughtful process (I know it was for me!). So thanks again for sharing, great inspiration!
    All the Best,
    Vicki

  10. Authenticity … I love that word, it flows with light abandonment and joy. You can almost sing it. Thank you for sharing these lovely quotes. I love the energy of your website 🙂

  11. Being real. Plain and simple. Not putting on false airs and being something or someone you are not. Sometimes when I am being authentic it is too much for people to handle. But, I cannot lie and hide my feelings well. I am me – take it or leave it. That being said I am kind and nurturing with a bit of wit and sarcasm mixed in.

    1. Wow Laurie I get that about being too much or being frank- what you see is what you get! When i am hiding away from my true self adn worrying about what others think, being authentic goes out the window

    1. Hi Sandra
Yes Meredith Monk quote speaks to me too. yes these layers seem to be infinite as one keeps growing into you unique very special being
      Namaste ♥♥

  12. Suzie, I totally get what you’re talking about. I, too, have been on a voyage of self-discovery and a couple of years ago, realized that the person I have to learn to love, respect and forgive the most is myself. Since then, more and more of my actions have pointed me in that direction. One of my favorite quotes is actually a short poem by Dr. Seuss:

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!”

And nobody but we ourselves can make our “you” the very best one she can be!

  13. I find the timing of your post remarkable as usual. My recent post is an update on my goal and explains what my biggest obstacle has been for being my authentic self.

    1. Love it Michele,
Tapping into the universal energy. it is amazing how when we are not being true to ourselves life can be hard. Love your new belief! Being me is healing.
      Namaste
